ABOUT THIS LIFE CAMBODIA

Empowering Self-Expression

and Equality for All

This Life Cambodia works directly with communities and authorities to address critical social issues, focusing on long-term, sustainable change. Their commitment lies in creating a Cambodia where children are not unjustly imprisoned and are empowered to thrive.

Through their evidence-based programs, This Life Cambodia aims to implement and advocate for alternatives to detention for children in conflict with the law, ensuring they have opportunities for rehabilitation and a future outside of prison.

In Cambodia, children aged 14-18 are often tried in the adult justice system and detained in adult prisons, frequently for drug-related offenses. The program works to ensure children in conflict with the law have access to alternatives to custodial sentences, offering them a chance to reintegrate into their communities and build positive futures.

Life-Beyond Bars

Many of the children incarcerated in Cambodia have limited education, lack access to vocational training or rehabilitation, and are exposed to harmful environments, leading to a high rate of re-offending (60% within six months); which results in significant social costs for communities. Through programs that provide vocational training, personal development, and support for families, This Life Cambodia is dedicated to helping these young people successfully reintegrate into their communities. The organisation's efforts have resulted in a significant reduction in recidivism, with re-offending rates dropping to just 2%. This demonstrates the effectiveness of their approach in empowering these youths to become contributing members of society.

  • What are their values?

    • We Listen.  This Life was born out of the act of listening, when our founder listened to the fears and hopes of people in a Cambodian community who felt that they were never normally heard, and then helped them to overcome those fears and achieve those hopes. Listening remains a foundational value, whether listening to the people we support in communities, or to each other, or to our supporters and partners.
